I can't recommend this enough! It has helped my mare keep her head after 2 years off and being brought back into work. It has also helped while on 4 months box rest for a suspensory injury. She has walked out daily without any dramatic or hysterics! If you have tried other calmers with no effect definitely give this a go.

Bought this calmer for my mare towards the end of her spending three months on box rest, it got to the point she was biting and sooo moody and she wasn't a happy mare, can't blame her!! Anyway after reading the good reviews of tranquil thought I'd give it go, well after about a week I noticed a difference in my mare, she was calming down, it definitely took the edge off, I couldn't believe it, I even managed to take her out for her first ride without feeling like she was about to explode,
And my mare isn't the easiest to ride out after time off,
great stuff for a great price!!!!

Competing
Can you compete using this calmer with it having valerium in it.
Valerenic acid, a constituent of the valerian plant, is a prohibited substance under FEI regulations so your horse should not compete whilst taking this supplement.

Can it be used as an instant calmer? If so, how long before the activity, should it be given? How long do the effects last?
Yes, Valerian can be used immediately before stressful or demanding activities. You should give it 30 minutes-2 hours before the event. The effects can last up to 24 hours but this is dependant on the individual horse.
Lorraine Hanna
Hi Valerian products were recently added to the "banned" list for horses competing under rules. What would be an approximate "withdrawal period " please?
I am unable to find the up to date list of FEI detection times but studies show that Valerian is absorbed and eliminated rapidly. A withholding period of 24 h should be adequate for this product although withholding for 2-3 days before competition is a good idea to err on the side of caution.

Once the 5 litre bottle has been opened how long does the effectiveness last?
This product uses natural preservatives a bit like vinegar. It should remain fully effective for several months, but would degrade in time. This will be a gradual process depending on things like, temperatures, humidity, degree and type of contamination (inevitable to some extent whenever any liquid is taken from the container). I would aim to use it all up within 3 months, but it should last considerably more time than that if you can keep it clean and in a cool, dry place (out of the sun).
